Arts and Philosophy Journal

A collection of articles, studio notes and reflections on art and aesthetics.

Arts and Philosophy Journal brings together selected articles on art, aesthetics and the creative process. It offers insights into artistic practice and related theoretical ideas. The texts range from short reflections to longer essays that mostly connect traditional Asian concepts with contemporary artistic practice. Readers will find observations from the studio, notes on technique, and thoughts on the philosophical ideas that inform my work in varous ways.

The entries are grouped thematically to make navigation easier, and they provide an ongoing record of my artistic and theoretical explorations.

Eastern Arts and Philosophy Blogs range

My writing on Arts and Philosophy Journal mirrors the diverse influences found in my art. The articles gathered here bridge the gap between Eastern philosophy and Western aesthetics. Primary themes include Asian art theory, the concept of “Qi” in brushwork, and the interplay of Yin and Yang in composition.

However, this journal is not purely academic. It also includes personal travelogues, thoughts on the creative process, and observations on nature. Whether discussing the “Abundance of Modesty” or the structures of a dystopian society, the goal remains the same: to offer a comprehensive look at the ideas that shape the images.

Density, Depth, Tradition, and Authenticity.

Yunnan Spring greetings (III) Density, Depth, Tradition, and Authenticity. Ever since my very first experiences in China back in 1978, these four concepts have been inextricably linked with my understanding of the country and its culture. So let’s first turn our gaze to a place that embodies all these qualities in a truly venerable way:…

Just Shaxi and Fengyu. Yunnan Spring Greetings (II)

Journey to Shaxi (沙溪) On the way from Dali to Shaxi, we passed through Fengyu (凤羽). It’s a quiet, traditional town, famous for its intricate stone carvings and inkstones. A good place to see the rural side of Yunnan before entering the Shaxi valley. Authentic Flavors We had lunch there and the restaurant was simple…
