Ink, Brush and Calligraphy Across Five Decades
Welcome to the Fine Arts portfolio of Friedrich Zettl. This collection traces more than five decades of artistic work, from early Western influences to a deeply personal engagement with Chinese painting, calligraphy, Daoism and Zen.
The works shown here bring together Western modernism and Asian artistic traditions, moving between contemporary ink painting, abstraction, calligraphy and Zen-inspired art. Rather than following a strict chronology, the portfolio is organised around recurring themes and artistic ideas.
The Medium: Ink on Paper
My practice currently centers on the immediacy of ink. Unlike my earlier oil paintings, which allowed for correction and layering, this fine arts portfolio highlights the unforgiving nature of the brush on paper. My preferred materials include handmade paper, mulberry paper and Yupo, each chosen for its distinct interaction with ink. Each brushstroke records both physical movement and mental presence. Consequently, the work demands total presence and clarity before the brush even touches the surface.
Artistic Philosophy and Aesthetics
Philosophy drives the aesthetic you see here. You will encounter Zen-inspired art that seek to reduce the image to its absolute essence. I avoid decorative elements in favor of empty space and energetic structure. Furthermore, many pieces explore the beauty of imperfection and transience, resulting in series of Wabi-sabi paintings. These works accept the accidental and find harmony in the incomplete.

The fine arts portfolio is organised into thematic groups rather than following a strict chronology. This allows recurring ideas—such as Yin and Yang, the abstraction of nature, gesture and emptiness—to be traced across different periods of my work.

Early Works (1970–2020)
In the early years, Zettl mainly devoted himself to figurative art. In addition to landscape painting, it was above all portrait art that set the tone. From the years in China, between 1978 and 1985, techniques and philosophy from traditional painting took a central position.
