Mr. Zettl, this is the most touching and compelling photo I have seen in recent memory. Thank you for a moving, and in its way inspiring, image. This is where photography borders poetry. As every, fair play to you for your stimulating and informative blog.

Why are we reminded that a great many people have it really bad?
Why do we still vote at all?
Thanks for your questions! I assume they are rhetorical in nature but would like to comment on them. Also, I assume you know that I don’t mean to be presumptuous or lecturing.
Why are we still voting? Why are we still posting? Since you are a critical person who observes his environment well, you probably also post to share your observations or to put your thoughts into a form. Basically I don’t do anything else. When we “like” a post, we’re showing our approval – or at least signaling that we appreciate the poster’s work.
However, I read something else from your question, namely a great deal of dissatisfaction, coupled with a question of “meaning”, “sense”. Both are easy to understand in times like these, but a good time to reflect that it’s up to us to find “sense” of everything.
As far as the photo itself is concerned, well, it’s like abstract art: What we see or can recognize in it, what it triggers in us, has little to do with the picture, but with our thinking.
