Abstract painting featuring a thick, vertical ivory-colored form with textured, porous details resembling bone or aged wood, set against a deep, dark red background. The central form is fragmented, suggesting a distorted or shattered crucifix.

When the World Shatters

When the World Shatters is an article, featuring recent works—a mix of finished paintings, unfinished pieces, and studies— which explores my observations on the current global situation. Some of these works were intended for my Series on War but fit perfectly within this context.

Abstract expressionist painting with dynamic, explosive brushstrokes in shades of blue, turquoise, black, and hints of red, suggesting a chaotic battle or birds in flight against a turbulent sky.

When the World Shatters sounds like a dramatic title. Most likely, we all experience the current events on the world stage from different perspectives, influenced by our geographic location. Nevertheless, few are truly satisfied with recent developments. When a world shatters, it doesn’t happen overnight; it is a continuous process. But like everything destructive, this collapse occurs much faster than any constructive buildup. Here are some of the cracks and fractures in a nutshell.

Abstract mixed-media painting featuring a vertical composition of vibrant blues and earthy browns. Rapid, gestural brushstrokes in black and white create a sense of movement between the upper sky-like regions and the lower depths

The Decay of Diplomacy and Order

A core development is the destruction of diplomatic institutions and the near-total disappearance of diplomacy. It is in the nature of things that countries with different cultures, ethnicities, histories, and religions have different interests. If we want or need to maintain relationships, the high art of diplomacy is required. If we abolish it, we head toward the “right of the strongest.”

Minimalist black ink calligraphy and brushwork on a plain white background. The abstract, energetic strokes are concentrated in the center-left, surrounded by vast negative space, accompanied by small red seals and vertical script in the lower right.

As a result, alliances shatter, even though cooperation is crucial for peace, progress, and the future. If we offend old friends, try to overreach them, or treat them like enemies, they will eventually turn away and forge new alliances [1].

This external collapse is mirrored in language: when words are manipulated to justify actions, the foundation of truth shatters. Internationally recognized institutions—such as the UN, the WHO, or the International Criminal Court—are not only undermined but targeted with threats and sanctions [2].

A complex, multi-layered abstract painting featuring a dense web of scratching and gestural marks. The palette is dominated by deep blues and teals, overlaid with sharp black strokes and subtle hints of warm yellow and red, creating a sense of immense pressure and internal collapse.

Breach of Trust and the Era of Fortune Seekers

When the world shatters, all credibility and trust vanish. Whether in private partnerships, friendships, or the economy: once trust is gambled away because one party cares only about personal gain, the fracture is almost impossible to mend.

We are entering the era of “Fortune Seekers.” Personal gain, extortion, and bribery are no longer practiced behind closed doors; they are even boasted about. A so-called elite, driven by greed, wants to grab as much as possible before the show ends. This greed creates a sophisticated system to accelerate wealth accumulation. It is no longer just about siphoning off funds; it is about manipulating the system so that even more is generated. Activities that were previously criminal—such as using insider knowledge or manipulating the stock market through the targeted release of information and leveraged options—are becoming the standard [3].

Boundless Destruction

When enough has shattered, there is no stopping it. Where there was once an effort to protect children, they are now targeted by bombings while sleeping in meager tents or shot while attempting to receive life-saving aid [4]. With every child killed, not only does the world of their parents shatter, but a cornerstone of humanity and civilization breaks as well.

Close-up image of a heap of construction debris on dry, cracked earth. Broken concrete pieces, twisted metal rebar, and scattered fragments are piled together, under natural daylight.

The environment, nature, and the oceans are also shattering. In Gaza, centuries-old olive groves are being razed to the ground; elsewhere, areas are burned down to buy land cheaply. The earth is rendered infertile for decades by thousands of tons of bombs, while the oceans rapidly approach their tipping point [5].

An abstract painting in deep forest greens and teals. Bright, explosive white highlights and sharp black gestural marks suggest a violent shockwave or a bomb impacting a marine ecosystem.

Social Decay and Inner Distress

Finally, societies shatter from within. Once internal strife reaches a certain level, a war is often started because an external enemy provides a sense of unity. The same applies to religion: godless actors within a “clerical-fascist” architecture, who constantly practice lies and deceit, now form the phalanx of “holy warriors.” War serves as another source for enrichment or a way to launder stolen money.

Abstract painting featuring a thick, vertical ivory-colored form with textured, porous details resembling bone or aged wood, set against a deep, dark red background. The central form is fragmented, suggesting a distorted or shattered crucifix.

This macrocosm of chaos find its counterpart in the microcosm of the individual. The spiritual balance is disturbed: external destruction leads to inner destruction through fear or numbness. When all these points intertwine, the world finally shatters.

A dark, haunting abstract painting on a black background featuring two organic, floating shapes. The shapes contain ghostly textures of pale green, white, and a striking patch of visceral red, suggesting a final state of decay or the last remains of a shattered entity.

P.S.: This article may sound more pessimistic than intended and perhaps overlooks the immense opportunities that lie ahead once this dark phase has passed. True renewal will require us to move beyond greed and embrace a more just distribution of our world’s resources. It is high time we recognize that the well-being of the whole depends on the balance of its parts. Refocusing on constructive, equitable action isn’t just an option—it is a necessity, and it is long overdue.

Your very touching post makes me speechless , Friedrich, and I just hope that the world starts, as you say, “Refocusing on constructive, equitable action, which isn’t just an option—but a necessity, and is long overdue.” Many thanks:)

The first (and last before the last) painting and the last chapter I love most. But all this post is very moving..

Sadly, your reflections on the state of the world are spot on. Your art is poignant and captures the mood in an amazing and moving manner.

You are very kind Stan 🙏 Thank you so much! Let’s hope this dark chapter is over soon and we will see brighter days again soon. 🎶☀️🌷

Yes. This is my deepest hope. 🎶

ALL of these visually depict EXACTLY how I feel inside my heart and soul. My, how you have the gift and determination to touch one’s very nerve endings with these renderings of pain and anguish.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Your kind words are especially appreciated, thank you so much! As an artist, you probably find it easier to see the essence in my work. All the best!

  5. andreazurucker avatar

Wow. Your pictures should be illustrations of my war diary. They show exactly what I feel. Touching.

Thank you so much, Andrea, your kind words give me so much strength and motivation! In crazy times like these, it’s not always easy to feel so motivated. All the best!

Yes, what a shocking world we live in where there are at least 8 major wars going on at this time! Conflicts, not just in the Middle East but in Sudan, the Sahel, in Myanmar & the drug wars of Mexico; all classed as MAJOR and of course, Ukraine! Beyond this there are at least 30 other conflicts around the world where the lives of humans and the natural world are being torn asunder. WE ARE ALL TOUCHED BY THESE THINGS!

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Yes, we are all touched. I don’t think the world order was perfect a few years ago, but it was at least a usable framework. How long will it take us to recreate even this imperfect structure? I wish you a wonderful spring and much enjoyment in your garden!

The 2nd painting: this is such a powerful piece; it erupts, and because it remains partly abstract, its aftershock has extra force. Birds. Crows, to my mind, in agitation: bodies, wings, slashes, and fragments all caught in violent dispersion. It is a visual language for rupture, alarm, and sets me into my own dread, conscience, and grief that the world’s natural rhythm is shattered. I feel very much as those crows do, Friedrich.

There is something bittersweet, and also very human, in loving a work I cannot own. But in another sense, it has already become mine through from the intensity of my response to it. Not physically, of course, but inwardly.

Some paintings live with us that way.

Thank you so much, Marilyn! Yes, you interpreted the image perfectly. It’s an important image for me too. At first glance, one might think it’s just a random scribble. I spent five stages working on it, focusing on the aspects you mentioned. There are one or two other aspects I’d like to address in a separate article soon.

Yes, some images live within us! I also have some that I’ve carried with me since my youth, and some of them influence my own work to a certain extent.

Thanks again for your important and welcome feedback!

      1. Misky avatar

Scribble never came to mind, but a sword did — however as in the absence of a blade; that moment before blades make contact but all the intent to provoke a reaction is there.

“Clerical fascism” — I needed that term. I don’t think your words are unnecessarily gloomy. I think they’re accurate to the moment. Your paintings, too. I think a lot of us (the lucky ones) are wandering around in a twilight zone of disbelief while, at the same time, we see — accurately — what’s going on. That’s a very uncomfortable place to stand — but there are worse and we’re seeing them now. I appreciate this piece and your courage.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much, dear Martha! You described the situation perfectly. Yes, we are still “lucky,” “privileged,” but this bombardment of nonsense, lies, and hypocrisy is insulting and draining.

I said a year ago that religion would come into play as a trump card, and it’s already becoming quite clear. Ha—my new coinage! 🙂

  10. Rosaliene Bacchus avatar

“When the World Shatters” is not a dramatic title. It encompasses the path humanity is on, so well described in your article. Your paintings are all expressive of our new reality. The minimalist painting (3) struck me as the pompous stature of the wannabe annihilator of a civilization. I had to pause at #4 to take in the warring dark forces, coming at us from all angles, seek to shut out the light.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much, Rosaliene! As always, you interpreted the images perfectly. Sometimes a correction or a reset is necessary so that we can get back to the essentials. But the path has now become more difficult and longer, especially since the clique that led us into this mess has covered its back so well.

      1. Rosaliene Bacchus avatar

The path has also become a maze.

    Your post came up
Blank at first and I thought how apropos with the title. 😎
Shattered sharp, reflective art matches your words when it’s hard to come by them but you managed to convey the sad truth of the times. It begins to erode our heart and spirit and that is the very thing we need the take charge of as its gauging our pocket books. The population becomes colored by darkness as we face these realities and trying times. Sending love Friedrich!💕

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much, dear Cindy, for your kind words and welcome feedback! I’m so glad this article resonated with you, and yes, it’s disheartening to have to watch this farce unfold and feel powerless to do anything about it. Now we’re paying the price for neglecting, or rather sabotaging, educational institutions. But we won’t let it get us down, will we? Love to you too, Cindy!

The seventh painting depicts how I feel about this corrupt age. I also agree with your thoughts on our troubled world.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much! I am afraid there is more to come before we are on track again. But we are patient and confident….

Dear Friedrich, where there is will there is a way. So, with Marilyn’s help I am sending you my comment until we find out why they disappear!

” There is nothing pessimistic about your post or unnecessary about the depiction of current affairs.

I will only add a silent nod of complete agreement to your words.

And a Bravo, Maestro for the amazing details of your paintings. You have mastered the interplay of light and darkness; and you create a reminder but also a lighthouse for the rest to see.

Thank you, Friedrich, and may spring clothe you with health, energy and inspiration.

    Nick”

I imagine your paintings here exhibited in a gallery. Whilst witnessing and absorbing each piece, the words you have written are narrated. Such power in both Friedrich. Thank you.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much, Gray, for your kind words as always! The truth is, I’m often not only very dissatisfied with my work, but I also frequently question myself as an artist in general. And I think about it several times before posting an image in my articles – even when I mention that it’s just a study. Since you’re an artist yourself, self-doubt is probably familiar to you. Okay, I’ll just keep going and leave the thinking to the horses; they have bigger heads 🙂

      1. graysummers avatar

When I read that last ‘leave it to the horses’ sentence, you reminded me of Sir Paul McCartney’s song ‘Let it Be’. ‘When the broken hearted people in the World agree, there will be an answer…Let it be’.

Your paintings and words often get me thinking Friedrich. Your process of holistic inclusions regarding the philosophical considerations in your work is fascinating. Considering artists and self critique? I too am my own worst critic. But Painting, Lyrics, Poems, Photography, Melody Dynamics, etc. tend to include whatever an artist is presenting as to be heard or seen through our own ‘emotional considerations’ to a subject. Gustav Holst and his Masterpiece work ‘The Planets’, for instance, runs with the whole emotional story of astrological readings and how the planets effect us. From influential aspects regarding aggression, jollity, tranquility, peace, spirituality, ethereal, self reflections, etc..

And maybe that is where we find out that is why we are our own worst critics. The emotional input we ourselves give to our artistic outcomes may not, we feel, fully fulfil our own expectation of the holistic meanings we hope to have given to each piece once completed. What is fantastic though is when others give insights, upon seeing the work, and are positive in response. Speaking of how they feel themselves when regarding your work. And the responses in others’ comments to you have many wonderful observations regarding your art, words and photographs Friedrich.

        Cheers and all the best.

      2. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you so much, Gray, for your kind and encouraging words! You’re absolutely right, of course. Self-criticism has a very positive effect, as it helps us to develop further. Healthy development doesn’t happen in a straight line upwards. Periods of introspection, reflection, trying new and unfamiliar things, and much more, are what make real, long-term progress possible. With that in mind, Gray, let’s continue working on ourselves, accept our self-doubt with equanimity, and look forward to new heights. I wish you a creative time and much joy in finding and creating music. All the best!

      3. graysummers avatar

Thank you for your kind words too Friedrich.

The UN is practically worthless. It has not lived up to its mission. The WHO acted like a dictatorship during the pandemic. Not helpful. The World Economic Forum is turning into the Fourth Reich when it talks about reducing the human population, claiming that water is not a human right, etc. There comes a time when change is necessary, no matter how uncomfortable it is. We are going through that kind of a scenario right now. The world is not “shattering.” It’s no better or worse than it has ever been. But some things need to change.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you for sharing your view on this matter! Yes, quite a few things should change. And those changes will make the world shatter for many people, I am afraid to say.
