Zen Stroke

Selection of New Works

A small selection of recent works in different techniques.

Selection of new works: Today I just want to show what’s been going through my mind over the last month and what came out of it. Some I just sketched, and some I did in more detail. And of course, these works belong together in a certain way. I won’t write too much about it either, as I think I’ve been writing too much lately and testing my readers’ patience.

Selection of New Works (1)

I always take drawing materials with me when I go on vacation, but I rarely use them. This time I sketched the palm trees in front of my hotel window in 7-8 sheets. I’m happy with it because my handwriting is now becoming more and more apparent in my sketches.

Of course, this “handwriting” comes heavily from my calligraphic exercises that I recently presented (article 1) (article 2).

This led to a small series of gestural drawings that I also think are worth showing.

When you look at this simple line below, which means “one” ( 一 yi) in Chinese, there is a slight swing in it that hints at taking the line from two-dimensionality into a wider dimension.

Continuing and expanding on this idea led to this work (which is much smaller than the image in a virtual gallery suggests).

Selection of New Works (2)

Of course, I wanted to work on my impressions of the desert and sea after my return from Sharm el Sheikh. The working title for the first work on this topic is “Dance through the Desert and the Sea”.

When I did this my heart was already set on a new series in which I wanted to reflect morning moods. More like what you see in your mind’s eye before you finally open your eyes. So it’s about the disappearance of pieces of dream elements.

Extra:

Of course, I also took a lot of photographs on vacation. While last year it was sand and stones, this year palm trees were the focus. Actually just detailed photos of the trunks of palm trees.

I didn’t want to photograph stones again, but this one just begged for it…..

I really like the last two paintings you have featured here: while abstract in style, they remind me of koi swimming just below the surface of a pond, an activity I have always found meditative. I also appreciate your sumi-e like brushstrokes (not sure what it’s called in Chinese, but Japan like China regards calligraphy a fine art). I recently attended a spring show by an adult Chinese calligraphy class: while I was impressed by their work, I thought having to follow their teacher’s style in forming the pictographs hampered the potential artistry in their brushstrokes. Maybe they needed to experiment more with felt pens! At least it would loosen up their wrists and fingers!

Thank you very much for your kind and encouranging words. Have a great weekend!

Thanks again! Working with a brush definitely needs to be mastered first, I think. If you understand how Chinese calligraphy works, how the characters are composed, how an inner dialogue arises, etc., you have knowledge that you can also use in painting, regardless of the media. It’s a long but fascinating jouney 🙂

“When the Dream Comes to an End” and your “palm trees in Sharm el Sheikh” speak to me. I like your photographic studies, as well.

Thank you very much! I did quite a few and I am never sure what to show 🙂 And never sure what to think of them 🙂

So many fascinating works in progress… each deserving an essay easily!
    Bravo, Friedrich.
Morning Moods are far more diffficult to manifest than they seem.
I will emphasize the compositional expansion & breakdown of the Chinese character “one”… I am absolutely captivated by them.
Your parenthetical note abiut the size of those two creations made me think:
Is there any chance you will attempt such a work in much larger scale? Like the scale of the virtual gallery.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you, Nick! Yes, I would like to paint a really big picture again. I shy away from it because I find it increasingly difficult to pursue an idea over a long period of time. Maybe it will happen again when I paint at a friend’s house at the countryside this summer.

Thanks for sharing your latest explorations, Friedrich. I especially like the way you have captured the palm trees with just a few strokes. The captioned compositional expansion of the Chinese character one commands attention with its strength of expression. Your close-up photos of the trunks of palm trees remind me of the natural designs around us that we so often overlook.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you very much, Rosalia! Getting by with just a few words is of course a form of letting go and you have to think about what is essential and what is not.

Yes, engaging with nature and its designs is not only fulfilling but also educational.

      All the best! f

Dear Friedrich, I love all of these works. From your “waking up” paintings we can tell it’s not wintertime! I love waking up these spring mornings when the light is refreshing! (PS. I’ve started calligraphy again, tentative steps).

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you very much, dear Ashley! Great to hear you started calligraphy. Good luck! Yes, spring mornings are different and make one feel younger and more positive.

The degree to which I admire your work is as substantial as your own enthusiasm. Your visual presentation is refined, and the material you’ve written is stylish. However, you seem apprehensive about potentially delivering something that may be viewed as questionable. I’m confident you’ll be able to address this issue promptly.

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words! Yes, I think you’re not wrong. I like to avoid confrontations. Not because I’m a coward, but discussions on social media can often turn into lengthy and confusing conversations.

  21. Digital Empire avatar

Hmmm, they are confident and decisive! May I ask what the red seals stand for?

    1. Zettl Fine Arts avatar

Many many thanks! Confident? Well, behind the works there is often a hard battle against my self-doubt and self-criticism. The seals can be name seals or show the artist’s nickname. Or repeat the studio name or an uplifting slogan. And of course they have a compositional function and can conceal weaknesses in this regard.

      1. Digital Empire avatar

        Ah! I see, I see.

  22. Cindy Georgakas avatar

Wow, expressive and fresh. Almost feels like flying body pars in some of them. Lots of wonderful expressions, Friedrich💓👏
