Painted Calligraphy in Blue Ink
In March 2021, I was going through a particularly productive period, working on several series at once. Over seven days, I presented a selection of works made during the preceding two or three weeks.

I began with this painted calligraphy in blue ink on rice paper. It was made by writing several poems by Tang Yin (唐寅, 1470–1524) over one another. The difficulty is to bring order to the overlapping writing while keeping the painterly aspect in view.
Some columns remain dark and distinct; others fade into pale turquoise. Where they cross, the characters gather into denser passages. The spaces between the strokes let the lighter ground show through, so that the eye can still move within the layers.
