painting on environment version I

trying environment topic

with 2 vanishing points

I made 2 versions on a topic that has been with me for a long time: 2 vanishing points.

This is a very fascinating and complex topic that I would like to discuss in more detail in a blog post soon.
The easiest way to depict the subject is in a landscape painting and so I chose this construction first.

painting on environment version I detail

The surroundings of the upper vanishing point are calm and contemplative, the calm on a river with a view into the distance, while the lower vanishing point leads deep into the sea and is characterized by chaos.

The small look at the “surface” (of our world) appears stable and healthy.

There are some good aspects and I am quite happy with the force field that results from this split into 2 vanishing points. This makes the picture area appear very large. I will try to eliminate the existing weaknesses in another version.

Another thought that has been bothering me for some time, and not just for political reasons, has been incorporated: reflections on our nature, and environment. I don’t want to start another series with this topic, but I would like to try to translate one or the other idea into a graphic. And maybe it’s a niche in the market: environmental painting 🙂

This is a phenomenon (and your image is very like the reality) I see up in the mountains in which a stream meanders through a slow grade then suddenly finds itself plunging down a cliffside. I always think of the water going along, not a worry in the world then BAM!!! It’s crashing down over boulders and making small rainbows.

Thank you Martha! Yes, that’s what it’s essentially about. Capturing this long journey of the water in one picture can (almost) only be done with Chinese painting techniques.

I also used a trick: the black calligraphic lines go in zigzag lines through the picture and connect the levels so that the viewer perceives the distortion as very natural. It also increases the dynamism.

Traditional Chinese painting doesn’t seem concerned about fixed point(s) perspective. It is the point of view I have when looking at Clear Creek (every second creek in the world must be named “Clear Creek”) from above. I was thinking of painting this. It would be a fun painting but it would have to be very large and the bottom of the painting would be ONLY the moment when the (surprised) water plunges over the edge, not the falls themselves.

You can see the falls here in very high water in 2019 (and more Goethe 😉 )

Nice video! Right! For example, if you look at a horizontal Chinese scroll painting with a landscape, you generally only see a section and everyone has their individual vanishing point. This thought is very pleasant to me because everything is always changing – including our perspective in a figurative sense. But these types of paintings are out of date and I can’t remember seeing any appealing newer image in this genre.

I should take a break from painting. For a long time I have felt drained again and nothing good comes out of it when I paint. But I have so many ideas ……

Carpe diem. Ideas are pretty rare.

I like the idea of “Environmental Painting”. Artists from Picasso to Pollock incorporated political views into their works.

As an old follower of the Daoist thought, the topic of man and nature in the broader sense was very often a central topic in my work. I have largely broken away from integrating political thoughts into my work, as the political driving forces have shifted a lot and things have become more complicated. In addition, recent political images hardly seem to interest anyone. Since I’ve started painting again, I’ve just tried to process what is on my mind at the moment. Integrating environmental issues into painting would certainly be appealing, but maybe I don’t have the fire to get involved in this direction .

I enjoyed learning about this challenging composition. It has changed how I will look at all future works.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I am really happy to hear about your experience looking at my work! Much of my work, especially composition, the play of opposites, the use of brush and ink … are based on Chinese theories of painting. And calligraphy plays an important part in this.

Hi Zettl, It´s incredible these mixtures of colours, lines and forms. Congratulations. ¡What a job!

Hi Roxane, as I am often not sure if my works are good enough to show them I am very happy to hear someone likes it. Thank you!
