About Traditional Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese calligraphy is an ancient art form with a history of 3000 years. It is one of the most important visual arts in China and furthermore it is often a standard to judge other forms of Chinese art. In this article, we will explore the history and techniques of Chinese calligraphy.

Chinese calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters using a brush, ink, and water. It is a unique combination of writing and art that requires skill and practice to master. The typical Chinese calligraphy brush is usually animal hair. However synthetic brushes are common too these days since they are definitely cheaper. The three surfaces for calligraphy are paper, rice paper, or silk. Historically, the ink was made from soot and animal glue and was applied to the writing surface with a brush. Today, modern water-based inks are more commonly used as they are easier and safer to work with.
