How Low can You Go?
I usually don’t spend much time digging through dusty boxes at the local flea market. But last Sunday, a bizarre album cover caught my eye. It was called “How low can you go?” by a band named Don Pedo and the Grifters, recorded live at the Liars Club.
The cover showed a group of guys in sharp suits playing bluegrass instruments in a saloon. It looked ridiculous. I bought it for two euros.
I know nothing about rare vinyl. So I put it on eBay with a starting price of $10, figuring some collector of obscure vintage records might want it.
And then things got weird. Within an hour, the price was at $500. By Tuesday, it hit $5,000. People were sending me frantic messages asking about the matrix numbers on the vinyl. Apparently, this was an unreleased, legendary bootleg from a notorious underground group.
The auction ended today. The winning bid was exactly $20,000.
It is a perfect example of Yin and Yang – extreme worthlessness transforming instantly into extreme value. Trash and treasure balancing each other out in a single piece of cardboard.
I am currently figuring out how to ship a $20,000 record safely. But before I buy the bubble wrap, I should probably remind you to check today’s date on your calendar. Happy April Fools’ Day.
