Friedrich Zettl early sketchbook chinese minorities

early sketchbook with Chinese minority people

Today I’m showing you a sketchbook that I’ve never taken out of the drawer. Maybe for a good reason?
Actually, they are single sheets that I then mounted in a Chinese fan-fold album.

They are not masterpieces, nor were they intended as such. Rather, I wanted to capture some impressions. It’s been 40 years since I drew it and then sorted it out as second quality. When I saw them again, I thought they had a certain charm.

At that time I loved using charcoal pencils set in wood. Unfortunately, I can no longer get this good quality. When I came back from China in 1985, I brought a lot of painting material with me. It was cheap and of good quality. Today you have to know where you can buy good quality. You can forget all of the goods from online trading.

I like these very much. You’ve captured personalities.

Thank you Martha! I hope I at least was able to catch the personalities. This has always been my stronger part as I did many portraits. I considered them less good as I followed illustration too much.

These images have the feel of good anthropology.

Thank you! Indeed I did studied ethnology too 🙂 Before I decided to study arts in China I thought of studying ethnology there but was pretty sure I would not get what I was dreaming for.

I’m not good with words. Can I just leave a smile here? 🙂
Thank you for creating this set. 😊
