After I decided yesterday to throw away a piece of work that I presented yesterday here at wordpress – or at least release it for shooting – I painted the basic idea of that work in a completely different version and I’m relatively satisfied with the result.
The picture again has a dramatic sky but, more daring than the earlier attempt and yet more sensitive and well integrated into the overall composition.
I did resort to the trick of making the front part warm, but in a way that seems rather natural.
(I also worked on the first version, the result can be seen at the bottom).
My aim in art is not to work with superficial optical illusions, but I do use them to reinforce certain ideas. The main idea is to play with contradictions. In the western way of thinking, we often understand opposites as absolute quantities. In the Asian way of thinking, one is always anchored in the other and it is up to the artist to uncover and present this play of forces.
Whet were my thoughts on the new work? This painting works with a few levels, but these are only hinted at very delicately. With stronger accentuation of light and shadow I sure could work out the levels even more clearly, but that seems too vulgar to me.
See sketch. Basically it’s about this:
While the “path” to the dark mountain range on the far left seems very short (incorporation of the white spots), the path in the right-hand part is long (zigzag line of the flow of forces, “qi” 気). And this zigzag continues in the clouds and the picture closes with the resulting lines of force (see details at lower part).
Communication is an essential aspect in all of my work. The communication between the individual parts of the cloud, the communication between the mountains, the overall communication creates “mood”.
The center of the lines of force and conversation is the semicircular, blue spot outside by the sea, which was deliberately kept very abstract. It communicates with the clouds with the mountain peaks and even with the boulder in the foreground. It should be more than just a vanishing point.
This idea with the rock massif and the surrounding area has been on my mind a lot. I think she hogged me after seeing a painting by Tapies which fascinates me very much. Of course I don’t copy other painters, but just as little one can not avoid big ideas. (With Tapies I have to be very careful not to be too enchanted).
As mentioned above, the rewrite of the image I presented yesterday.
What is new?
What is different?
1) The original version had a scattered field of forces. In the new version (the principle) heaven and earth are connected.
2) The part of the sky (i.e. the clouds) got more inner life and now communicates with the “continent”
3) The unsuccessful treatment of the right mountain range was corrected and power was generated with just a single line.
And a few minor corrections. I can’t say whether I’m really satisfied with it. Take it off and watch it again 2-3 weeks later.
