Recent Work: Day 4/7 gestural calligraphy

gestural calligraphy

I have a phase of great creativity and work on several series at the same time. For one week I will present representative works from the last 2-3 weeks.

In the gestural calligraphy series, principles of traditional calligraphy are used to make random formations appear as if they were calligraphy. Elements from surrealism are used again and again.

似与不似之间

Works like this also follow a different principle in Chinese art: between absolutely similar and absolutely dissimilar (shì yǔ bù shì zhī jiān 似与不似之间) . Often the viewer is directed in a certain direction – and only recognizes the optical illusion on closer inspection, which creates an interesting field of tension.

Thank you very much! I know that it is not easy to understand certain aspects as they are too closely related to princples in Chinese calligraphy but I try to do it in a way that it works for the viewer without knowing these.

These are fascinating….seemingly three dimensional at first glance, but then I see something different as I continue studying them. Beautiful. 🙂

Thank you so much! I am happy to hear you like them! Yes, I added a three dimensional aspect to Chinese calligraphy and a strong touch of surrealism. I am still working on this series and my recent works give me motivation to continue.
